I’m more inclined to , stop turning the engine over and remove the valve cover to see if the front guide broke and the timing chain is loose.
then the engine front cover to replace the chains and guides and tensioners.

I see, to prevent potential further damage to the valves and pistons. Good thinking.

Finally got to work on the car and the timing chain is broken. Now to figure out if the motor is ok. Any helpful hints?

If the timing chain actually broke, then it's almost certain that the engine is trashed. These are interference engines which means when the chain breaks, the pistons will contact the valves. Especially if you've been trying to get it started by turning it over as you posted.
Broken chain = major damage. Start looking for another engine.
