The Best Laid Plans
After giving a positive review of the new to the U.S., Barum Bravuris 3HM tires to our Member and my friend Silverfox.
I was all set to put up a thread recommending them as very nice entry level Performance/Touring Tires. All set that is until yesterday on I-85 when the tread on the right rear tire decided to go "Bye Bye!".
It came off in one piece, no flapping, no thumping, just a very sudden dropping sensation at 85 mph, followed by a slewing motion to the right. I saw the tread in the act of leaving in the mirror, it was in one piece, or it was until the Peterbilt from ABF Freight ran over it.
Paddy was undamaged, which made me happy, I've seen separating treads beat the fenders and quarter panels off of cars and light trucks.
Needless to say, I wasn't thrilled, and installing the "Acme Novelty Spare" AKA The Donut by the side of a highway called "Blood Alley"...made me less than cheerful.
At the request of the Continental/Barum Tires people, I'm not going to post up any pics of the carcass, they have it and they are being very proactive about the failure and its cause.
So I'd still say they're good tires, but not for me, that's not saying you shouldn't consider them. I choose to believe this is an isolated deal, and a big to Continental for saying "we'll replace them with any brand you'd like".
So Paddy has new shoes, free of charge, and I went back to the tried and true Uniroyal Tiger Paw GTZ Ultra High Performance tires in the proper 215/55/ZR16 size with the XL load rating.
*Yes I know my calipers and drums need painted again, that's a weekend project in the near future*

Glad the tread detached as one piece and no damage was done to Paddington.
I know what its like to have a tire do that, except my tire stayed attached and
did some damage to the rear quarter on my '85 Monte SS. I was on the interstate at the
time too. When i heard it i reached over and shifted to neutral after letting off the gas.
I thought the engine was letting go but the sound was still there, so i knew it wasnt the engine. ~

Ol Paddy gave me a ride there for a few seconds, I've blown tires, but I've never had one just shed the entire tread.
It was a different case on my '83 Malibu Classic coupe with the 305 V-8, the left front let go and the tread took out the inner fender and the radiator, it sounded like the engine blew too.
That was a brand new Goodyear, and even 32 years later, I still won't buy their tires for a street car.
Their whole attitude was "tough bleep buddy, you got comprehensive coverage right?", when I raced, well it was a different story. You either ran Goodyear Tires or you didn't race.
