I have sad news on this front regarding our "smoked" chrome wheels. I made a post last week or two, saying mine had gone bad. GM agreed to replace and I received plastic smoked wheels.

Today I complained and the service manager couldn't believe it either. He checked out my old ones and guess what - they were plastic as well.

I am disgusted. I bought a 2LT with a smoked chrome package at $22,600 and find out they're nothing more than a plastic hubcap that would sell for $29.95 at WalMart.

So all you guys out there that have wanted to "upgrade" to smoked chrome - don't bother. They're junk.

And as far as "refinishing" - try sanding off the clear on these..

I'm starting to lose heart......

If these wheels are plastic, just remove the coating,

fix any flaws, and spray paint them with primer and paint. Then if they ever get scraped again, you can easily touch them up.

The smoked chrome sounds like an experiment that didn't work.
Whatever happened to the fuel injection units on '57 Chevrolets and Pontiacs?

whats bad is if you replace it........ it might be lighter or darker than what you have..... like i said the dealership had to order 7 to get 4 to look alike. it would be really hard for me to buy something on line or ebay etc. with out seeing them. i would really be afraid of just buying one due to it probablly wont match.

Are these just glued on to the underlying wheel? If so, what's underneath? Will it be a dull wheel or is there a nice finish under there? If the latter is true, why not just pop all four of the covers off and go with the real wheel underneath. I know you won't have the black chrome anymore, but at least you would have a nice set of wheelies underneath.
