So is oil/water accumulating in the can, or is it not escaping the valve cover?

 

Carbon on the tail pipe usually comes from water vapor in the exhaust.

Getting the P0420 cleared up probably helps the performance since that keeps the ECM from going into closed loop mode.

I just purchased a catch can, I will show pictures of it as soon as it comes in as it's a really cool one for $40.

Is there a problem puting it in line between the engine and intake like shown here, are you saying the extra space in the can de pressurized the flow of air? I don't see how a bladder material would benefit if there is always an outward flow of air, the bladder would never expand, plus if it did when it compresses where would it send all the fluid both ways?

You guys will have to explain, I am confused.

To me it sounds like the intake would be constantly pulling air from the can which would pull oil vapor from the engine. I would hate to interfere with that in anyway because that could cause damage to the engine if there is a build up of internal pressure.

The intake on the 2.2 is in vacuum mode only under throttle.
On my 2.2 setup, the catch can does simply that , catch any fluids that are vacuumed out of the valve cover.
The hose goes to the elbow before the throttle body, so very little vacuum at idle.

 

I'm not sure what you're confused about. You speak of a bladder, but no one on this site has ever mentioned a bladder with regard to a catch can.

Also, what did you guys think of that can? It's small, but should be a good size for an HHR and can be unscrewed to drain, also there is a cool dip stick to check level and the baffles can be unscrewed and stainless mesh can be added for better filtering.

I read the first 10 pages, I am shocked that so much oil(actual oil!) was being dumped into their PCV systems. Don't know what the pricing is now, seemed kinda pricey in their thread for an empty can. Most cans are empty, This does seem like above average quality, from what I could tell. The dipstick may be a good feature, sightglasses are another opportunity for a leak.

It's also nice that you can really open it up. Not much room for filtration media, but maybe you could do something like Cat Man did on his catch can, with the sink strainer. That would allow you to add more filtration media. And the tube he added to route the air into the lower part of the can is a good idea, forcing the air stream to pass through the extra media.
