how would I know which it is - the resister as you mention - or the fan? my boyfriend tapped on the console just under the glove box and when he did the heater started blowing again, so we asume it is the heater fan blower... how do we know for sure if it is this or the resister?

It would not be the resister itself, but connectors could be loose anywhere from the switch to the fan. That wire goes to ground, the other wire on the fan motor goes to 12V.
If the resistor fails the fan will run but only on high.

This video shows how to change out the blower motor. It's located under the glove box facing up. The guy shows a ring that comes with the new part but doesn't give any info on it. Hope this can help you and others that experience the same problem.
