Yes it could be as simple as checking the transmission fluid level.

 

Is the OP’s car a SS or not ???
This thread is in the HHR SS forum but post #1 says it’s a 2011.

 

OP profile says 2011. Probably just started in the wrong place due to a search hit.

This is a serious safety issue. Get it to a really good mechanic yesterday.
