My dealer is selling me the running boards at their cost, $457.00 and installing for free. They said that GM told them that they will paint it one time for free and strongly urge you to get the running boards and 3M tape.
I'll get it in writting when I take it in for the running boards etc.

This is the first time I`ve seen/heard anyone say the dealer strongly urged (3M) tape.
Where do you suppose this particular 'shaped' piece is gonna come from, or are they saying, "just slap some on"?
PS. If anyone who gets boards has the guards removed and avail., I`m in the market for a set...

Any competent vinyl/tint shop that does paint protection should have no problems precision cutting it to match the vehicles curves and surface.

Yeah, but this was a dealer, and there had never (that I can recall) been any mention before of such a fix/remedy, maybe others who don`t like the 'board look', could go this route.

Dealers usually have a vinyl/tint shop that they farm paint protection work to if they offer it. Just like they do with undercoating.

I can`t say what dealers "Usually" have, from what I`ve read on this site, dealers don`t even have stock (one would think) items on hand.
But it could be a remedy, most definitely cheaper, and probably removable/replaceable.

I believe they are from the spring edition All black HHR....Instead of black plastic on top of the running boards they are to have aluminum plates....so no warpage of the plastic.

They were probably referring to the clear bra type stuff that seems to be showing up on the new HHRs on the rear fenders in place of that plastic chip guard thing that was on the earlier HHRs like mine.

This is news to me. All the HHRs I've seen, including each of the special editions, had plastic pads on the running boards.

Do you have a pic of this aluminum plate?

And this is news to me, never heard/saw anything about a 3M coating (on fender) until now...
