Etching of paint on rocker panel and rear door rock guard
A former member Tokyo did it to his HHR forever ago because he didn't like the look of the running boards and it's obvious that there are going to be chips there from driving. That's not an uncommon spot to do on other vehicles too.
Just relaying what I read elsewhere. A member here saw a 2008 National Rental HHR and in his post on another forum, this was what he indicated. Another member here also commented it sounded like material she saw on a panel so maybe it was changed in 2007 or maybe was first used on the panel. Or maybe we are all wrong and it was installed aftewards by the owner or dealer.
3M Chip Guard
Yes the chip gaurds for those w/o boards have been redesigned. They are MUCH thinner, though still thicker than most clear bra-type products I've seen. Saw it up close on a panel. Not very noticable.
I just got home from the dealer w/ the Beautiful One, saw a Sandstone(?) 1LT, sure enough, a film of 3M plastic on the fender where the guard used to be...
Must be cheaper/easier to replace.
Didn`t look bad, but a few gritty days and it will be clouding.

I really like the 3M guards/sheets
Well if any members get their fenders repainted, and they take the old-type guards off, I`m looking for a pair...
PS. Man they look cool (er). in case you wanted an unbiased opinion
