Hhr did start but engine stopped
The 2.4 is variable valve timing. The 2.2 isn’t. Slightly different bore and stroke. But they share a lot of parts - all the ones you named and more. If the 2.4 is nice, it maybe worth fixing later, so keep it if you can afford the money and space. If it’s not so nice, it might still be worth fixing if you can do it on the cheap yourself, but you probably need to assume r&r for the head and valves in addition to the timing chains. It’s the kind of project a lot of people plan on without actually getting around to doing. If the body and/or the interior are the same color, that’s points in favor of a parts car, but you shouldn’t need that if the 2.2 is nice.

One question. Is it possible to swap the dead 2.4L engine for a 2.2L engine? I see 2.2L engines for sale for about $900 CAD. I think it's not that expensive considering I would have two HHR.
