Thanks for the info. I don't think any of my brake lights are out but it may be that I haven't noticed yet. Third brake light... I think that's a light in the middle of the tailgate, not on the back corner? I'll have someone check while I touch the brakes inside the car to see if it's out. The cruise control not working has developed within the last three months. I drove to Colorado in May (live in Utah) for a concert (Nightwish, if you're curious) and it was working.

Broken battery cage would mean getting a new remote fob, right? Does a dealer have to do that so it can be programmed to my car?

I'll do a search for both guides. Thanks.

You can solder the battery cage, if your brake lights are working, is there a CEL light on? My cruise control stopped working when I had a CEL problem

another fob fix from our dear friend whopper.

Thanks again for this information. I don't know how to solder something nor do I have any equipment to solder with. I've looked at a couple of the solutions people found to repair or replace their key fobs. All of the coding and programming stuff goes over my head. I can't afford the equipment either. I used to build computers when I had a stable place to live and a good job, but most of my tech skills no longer do me any good.

There's no CEL (am I understanding correctly, check engine light?) right now to go along with the cruise control refusing to work. Since I have to have those two things done by a dealer and I have the option to get some auto repair work done free of charge (paid by a grant), I'll probably just ask the dealer to help me even though dealers are more expensive. I've got to get my car back on the road so messing around with DIY solutions that I'm not really good at implementing seems fruitless.

I really do appreciate your time in sending me all of this information! Thank you!

You do not have to go to a dealer for programming.

Dorman has a fob and programming module kit. The fob is less than perfect, but the module will program the vehicle to accept OEM fobs also.

A locksmith should be able to do the job also.

THE most common reason for cruise control failure is 1 or more of the CenterHighMountedStopLight bulbs is blown out

If you you can figure out how to get the tip of a small screwdriver or a similarly-shaped object near red hot you can do the re-solder job. Usually, no additional solder is needed. Some drug users have little torches. Obviously this service will cost you a buck or two.
