Does anyone know why this is happening? or what I need to do? I checked the fuses- all the ignition fuses (2 I think) are good.
2008 HHR LT
my mother had the same problem it was the ignition switch ( not the key switch)

If the battery dies when the key is in the ignition the security system locks the key in the cylinder.
So, I doubt your mother's symptoms were exactly the same.

My bet is your battery is dead or a major fuse is blown. IIRC

The key can be removed by a plunger accessed on the button of the steering column and within the trim. I think the Owner’s Manuel has that info.
Now it seems he's cars just have this issue. I'm having the same issue never had it with this car before and I've had it for a while. All of a sudden my battery is going dead but the battery is still good. I have put a couple of new batteries in it only fixes the problem for a short while then it does it again what is causing this it's crazy
