Good on ya sir! By the time we're finished you'll know it inside and out. In my opinion, the engine in your car is a basket case. Who knows what kind of life it had. Your cheapest route will probably end up being a donor 2.2. I say this because by the time we get that mess sorted out we could've had the donor in place. At minimum it needs a wiring harness + ECM, solenoids, probably a timing chain kit, ect.

We can run down to pull a part and snag a 2.2 for less than 200 bucks with a 30 day warranty. Rebuild it (if the budget allows) and you're on your way.

-my 2 cents

I've done some digging now these cams are the VVT set up with those big drum like pieces on the end, I would think that is the VVT part controlled by the solenoids
Notice the cam doesn't have any extra equipment on them

Now these are the lowly non VVT camshafts setup no VVT pieces bolted to the end of the cam, so the sprockets must be alittle different but I figured I would post these and Dan can chime in unless his sunburst orange HHR doesn't have VVT or does , Dan which did it have.

My theory is if the cam sprockets look like the second picture in Irishkiley's engine then you should be able to just better plug the VVT solenoid holes. Make sure the wiring harness is corrected and the engine has the proper ground wires, ECM and all should be fine
If the ECM is looking for cam position solenoids and the aren't there, then the code would show.
Just a theory but I think a plausible one!

Here is a good write up about the 2007,2008 version of the 2.2 Ecotec, and why to stay away from earlier versions, in that respect you may have an older 2.4 Ecotec stuffed in that engine bay, just cause it fit and kinda looks the same
Do you have that D in your vin ?
