Check battery connections at the battery and the connections at the under hood fuse box battery cables. A loose and or poor connection can give you that symptom.

Yes, could be a bad connection or a low battery. I once had an alternator go out (in another vehicle) and so was running off the battery. Eventually, whenever I hit the brakes, dash lights would dim and the engine would cut out. Ran a few stop signs in an effort to make it back home!

Since you're seeing some single digit temperatures in your area tntwolt(Good 'ole Weather Channel), and your battery is four years old which can be when the OEM Delcos get iffy in cold climates.

You might want to scoot by an auto parts store or auto electrical shop to have your battery load tested and charging system checked out.

As noted here on the forum numerous times, HHR's can act up in some very odd ways when their battery voltage drops excessively.

Just a random thought: it is the same key that you have always used? An unmatched key would throw the car into anti-theft mode.

Hi tntwolt,

I can understand the frustration that can come from such vehicle concerns. Have you had your local dealership try to address the problem? If this is something you would like my assistance setting up please reach out via PM. Please include your full name and contact information, VIN, current mileage, and preferred dealership.

Sincerely,

Jonathan A.

looks like i found it, loose ground on battery. had to change a flat and just thought to check battery connections, guess what, ground could have been pulled off by a 10 year old. what the hell kind of clamp is this?
