At least the head gasket is above the water pump!

A simple compression test should reveal if the head gasket is bad.

If the coolant is leaking into the cylinder, it would. But if it's leaking between a coolant passage and an oil passage, then, no. I think it would be wise to check, since he's not planning to change the head gasket at this time.

I got back there with a mirror and a camera and could not pinpoint the leak. I think it would be odd for the head gasket to leak exactly at the part of the engine where the water pump is!

Have not heard anyone mention the engine block porosity problem. This was an issue with some of the 2008 SS engines.
Doubtful but another thing to check on. Especially since you can’t seem to locate the leak.

From the top of the block see the water jackets, over on the left by the water pump. Possible leak area

Here’s a look from the water pump mount side , it could be the gasket just above the round hole where the water pump bolts up!

With the water pump bolted on no you can’t see much , however the cylinder head does sit just above the water pump, you should be able to see better once the pump is removed

Thanks for the pics. No wonder I can't find the source. Its hidden back there. Hoping its the water pump or gasket!

I should be able to tell after I've replaced the pump and gaskets.

Make sure you clean those surfaces the water pump gasket contacts.

To get the bolt out from between the heater lines, you must remove the coolant temperature sensor, this photo is upside down

Here’s a photo of the block side and the strange oring that becomes square when you install it.
