So there's nothing broken, I'm not sure if the tensioner failed or if it's because the bolt on the tensioner guide had wiggled itself just slightly loose. All bolts were torqued to spec when we did this job 2 years ago, so I'm going to investigate the threads and bolt this evening. It definitely was one link off, and did slap the top guide when rotating the engine clockwise manually.[size=33px]
By “slap the top guide” do you mean the chain was loose? Because it should be pretty snug. If everything else was intact and the chain was loose and/or had jumped, that suggests that the tensioner had not done its job.

I remove the t stat to engine housing and then the pipe, I leave the heater hoses alone. If your thermostat to rad hose housing has that blank capped off , I replaced the housing with one from a 2007 2.2, no extra port to cap off!

It's all back together and running like a top. The Cloyes exhaust balance chain sprocket did not want to fit on the balance shaft no matter what, so I left all OEM balance shaft gears. It looks like the flat spot/key wasn't cut exactly right on the back of the gear.
