I've run Magnaflows on another car....no "break in"...but after a couple thousand miles, they were a little more "marinated"...and sounded a bit more "Magnaflow-ish" after that....which was a good thing.

Many exhaust shops(not national chain muffler shops) can/will be happy to make up any configuration you want, providing it doesnt cross any legal lines(emissions)

They may also be able to recommend some set ups that work well, as well as let you 'test listen' various mufflers...they simply slide the muffler in place, and seal off the pipe gap and run the car...you can hear it INSIDE and OUT.
granted, dry revs dont tell you much without a load on the motor, but you will at least get a sense...it's tough to make muffler decisions because once you install them...you own them.

I noticed underneath our cars there is a LOOOOONG resonator...Dynomax makes a great straight-through muffler called a "Bullet"...it is essentially a glass-pack style resonator with silencer shells around the inner tube, surrounded by steel mesh like a magnaflow....

I run Bullets on both my other cars(V8's) and on my race truck...love them...one of these day's I'll have to remove the stock resonator and muffler, and weld in a Bullet and see how it sounds....

I am a gear head, and love a nice rich tone...I cannot stand the 'swarm' sound that many imports have these days...I feel the urge to swat at my ear when they drive by with aftermarket mufflers and coffee can tips...if my HHR ever sounds like that....shoot me.

I thought about doing something similar at first, but I decided to keep the resonator. I thought that without it, it wouldn't sound deep enough.
