Engine Tear Down

Well here is the Ls1 on the stand at the engine shop. Tonite begins the dis assembly and inspection. The heads are first so they can go get in line for the cnc porting machine. Once the block is stripped down we can measure everything and figure how it will be machined. Once the machine work is started I can order parts for re assembly. Really excited about this part.

Sometimes I wish it was a SEMA car

It's getting to the time when everything seems to hit everything else. I'm finding I don't have enough room for the cats to fit in the area they must go. It's gonna take more surgery in a critical area to fit them in. As you know, O2 sensors and cats can't go just anywhere in the exhaust system. There is an exact location plus or minus just a few inches that they will work. Those SEMA cars didn't have cats or a whole bunch of other critical things that are required on a driver.

Oh well, this too will get sorted out, it's just going really slowly right now.

I have not decided yet, you're a hero or a maniac. But what you did - very cool. I take my hat. Do not often see the wizard - nugget.

Engine Tear-Down cont.

Well we pulled the heads and guess what? Somebody put 2 sets of head gaskets on this engine. Maybe there is a warped head. Why would someone not fix the problem? Two sets of head gaskets is just stupid. Oh well, the cylinders are over by about .006" which is acceptable. As soon as it's flipped over we will pull the pan and inspect the crank. At that time I'll be able to tell which direction this motor is going. If the crank can't be saved we will get a stroker crank. If it's good we will just go 10 -20 over with a stock crank.

Either way. It will be a strong runner.

I do know that the LS1 engine uses MLS gaskets (multi layer steel). Is that what you see or is there really two complete sets?

I would guess that to install two gaskets stacked up would be pushing the hydraulic lifters to there max travel or the head/rockers has been modified to keep clearances correct.

My engine guy says 2 sets and he has done a lot of ls motors. In any case, I cant wait for this thing to be all shiny and new. A lot will happen in the next few weeks as far as the motor goes. The trans is finished, sitting on the bench.
