Only for Factory HU?

hey guys,

this is a really awesome mod...and everytime I read it and think about it, I really want to upgrade my HHR steering wheel too.

Only question I have is this: does this mod only work for factory radio headunit?

I will be installing an LCD mp3/DVD/CD aftermarket headunit and would like for the steering wheel controls too. Or would it no longer be plug and play for an aftermarket HU? I have an 06 non-pioneer HHR.

I eagerly await for your veteran-HHR wisdom. haha.

Just ordered the switch, cover and sub. I added a note (which I hope they read) that I need raised buttons and silver cover. I hope it works with the base radio (no mp3).
Im hoping to put in the sub box and add my own amp and 10" woofer.
Anyone have hints on removing the interior around the sub?

Argh. They just phoned me and said I cannot order the radio controls because they wont fit the vinyl steering wheel, only the leather wheel. I used a vin from a vehicle with my color combo and premium system.
Does it really make a difference? Has anyone here without the leather wheel added the radio controls? Mine is a 2008, not sure if that would make a difference.

Ordered the same parts using a leather equipped vin, still no luck, I got this email:
Hi
As i explained on the phone, the steering wheel parts on your order are not correct for your car.
The radio control option was only offered on cars with a leather wrapped wheel.
This cover and switch will not work on your (non-leather) steering wheel...........
Furthermore, the wiring harness is not available seperately, it only comes as part of the (leather)steering wheel.
To do what you want to do, you will have to buy a leather wrapped wheel, some other parts and possibly a different airbag........and your column and dash may not have the required wiring to support the function.

I went to the dealer, got 2 of the 3 items next day - no hassle. The 3rd item took a while & many calls. Sadly, the silver color of the trim doesn't match....

Not true, mine's a urethane wheel, and I've fitted the controls, why would GM make a different cruise side control for the two wheels? The only thing justifying that response is that as standard the audio controls come only on the leatherbound wheel, so GM won't have the option configured with the urethane wheel.

Fontana Motorsports,

What color is the 15907681 part number for?

Also would you only have to swap over the air bag?

Thanks
