I'm doing timing chains and the pump here in the next week or so. Hopefully, it'll go well.

Drain the coolant and the water pump , there’s a drain plug for that. You don’t want coolant in the oil pan.remember you will have to remove the coolant temperature sensor (a 19 mm deep socket) to get to the three 10 mm bolts holding the thermostat housing in position. I reach down from the driver’s side of the engine.

…the tool

Sorry that happened to you. I had to do the same job, but from these guys I got the heads up warning about the tensioner….so I took a good look and measurements of the tool I rented….and found it lacking. So, I modified it to where these was no possible way it could give the chain any slack. And fortunately I didnt have and chain ti tight whining issues.
The dia. Of the tool was good bit smaller in dia. Of hole thru the cover and also liked about 1/2” touching the water pump sprocket….so I built the dia. Up using aluminum hvac tape to correct dia. and made 1/2” thick plastic shim, got longer bolts for the tool…then when I tighten the tool to the sprocket it had no kind of slack
