I didn't know; that's why I asked the question. I know that both the keys and the fob use electronic codes to operate, and both must be programmed to match the individual car. Whether or not the codes were linked was the point of my question.

Since I'm not an electrical or automotive engineer, I come to the forum to learn about these things. I for one don't have all the answers to every question.

A valid question obie, and one that's easily answered.

Even if the keys are replaced, your current fobs will be retained, and they'll not require any reprogramming of the vehicle.

While I'm sure it was covered earlier in this thread, it never hurts to ask a question when you're unsure.

Speaking on behalf of the Moderators here, their workload has increased tenfold since the beginning of the Recall Campaign. And I'm sure whopper's reply held no ill will towards you.

We are all trying to do our best in a situation that is changing and evolving daily, and sometimes our frustration bleeds through.

If GM's legal department eventually approves our suggestion, a GM representative will be able to provide informational updates directly to our site, thereby eliminating the need to await updates via the media. And it will allow our site to pose questions directly to GM.

Stay tuned for updates.

Afriad to say anything but your cars keys and fobs will work as normal. Some get ign switch only and some get switch and lock cyl and keys. Its done by VIN # GM sends out in Kits. WE dont even Know how GM decides who gets what kit.

Just like to Thank All of You that run this forum for the hard work you are doing trying to keep all of us HHR owners informed and in some cases responding to redundant questions.

Knightrider you should be able to call your dealer with your vin # and order your ign kit now. There starting to trickle in to the dealers but they have to be ordered for your car.

Called my Service Adviser at Rock Chevrolet yesterday. They installed my GMTU. Told him I had registered on my.chevrolet.com but I was not in their database yet. He told me they are entering new owners (I purchased my SS in September '13) as fast as they can.

He ordered my ignition switch & lock cylinder.

I have had no issues with my ignition. I have even tried to bring back the key to the "OFF" position by tugging on the key. No luck doing that.

When I have the work completed, I will post on this thread.

been waiting...

I came to this forum when I was first struggling with issues with my HHR. My ignition failed last year and a Buick dealership (closest to me) took care of it under their Customer Care program so I didn't have to pay anything out of pocket (except towing). I had been researching issues with the HHR and was beginning to get pretty peeved that the issues that exist weren't being posted as a Recall. I understood why though because I took my ride to the dealership countless times and they couldn't duplicate my power steering issue. Never failed, I'd have issues on and off and I'd take it to them and they could never get it to fail. So glad to see these issues have been recalled. Having the power steering go out is quite a pain...although I am quite stronger now lol

Chevrolet website

If you visit Chevrolet's website and try to manage your vehicle, you will have struggles.

https://my.chevrolet.com/web/portal/managemybrand?g=1

They have serious issues with their website, took me a few hours (it was after hours) to verify that my HHR was affected by the recalls.

Using their search feature to verify if your VIN is affected by the recalls, sadly you'll come up empty. Be sure to contact them directly, have a human verify your VIN is affected or not, because their site will tell you it's not yet I KNEW mine was so got onto chat with them (that's all jacked up too---sometimes works, sometimes doesn't).

So ensure you speak with an actual person when verifying the recalls on your vehicles. Just wanted to give yall a heads up.

Also, don't be so hard on the dealerships, consider the number of vehicles affected-----that's alot of work. These guys are swamped.
