GM Ignition Recall Extended to All HHR's 2006-2011 UPDATED!!!
I got a card in the mail reminding me to bring my car in to get the new switch. I had waited because I knew they didn't have the parts. When I got the card, I assumed they now had parts in stock. I took it in and all they did was order the parts. Why don't they have people call instead?
I'm not really enthusiastic about parts made in a mad rush in a plant in Mexico.

Oh............... Well you could have called first you know. That what my notification said to do. And that is what I did - and it worked out well. Even if they hadn't said to call first, I would have called to make sure they had the part available.
The process has been described numerous times in this thread already - contact dealer - they order the parts - the parts are ordered - delivered to the dealer - then they call to set up an appointment to do the recall.

Yeah. All my official GM recall notices say to "contact your dealer". Doesn't say to go see the dealer.
Now, if Don06's local dealer sent their own seperate little card, well, I think you'd have to take that up with them.

Question re: reimbursement for prior work
Has anyone tried to get reimbursed for a prior ignition switch replacement that was done by someone other than the dealer?
I had my ignition switch replaced last year after experiencing this problem (thankfully in my driveway and not on the road). The local dealer gave me a $400+ estimate to replace the part so I had my go-to local shop do it for $100 less (using parts they bought from the dealership). The dealership is now telling me that the reimbursement offer described in the recall letter applies ONLY if you had the prior work done at a GM dealership. I don't see anything in the letter that even hints at such a restriction. Has anyone gone through this process with a replacement done by a 3rd party? Or can anyone point me to any GM information online that describes this restriction? I've done a fair amount of looking but cannot find anything to support what the dealership is telling me.

I'm guessing at this, BUT you probably had the wrong switch and/or ignition part for the replacement, since it was before the recall (and the remanufacture of the correct part). So you will probably need to have it done again, under the recall.
As far as reimbursed.....no, can't think of anyone on the forum that has mentioned that. Additionally, do you know if the replacement was a GM part or an aftermarket. Doubt if they would pay for the aftermarket part.

I figured I would have to get the work done again since it sounds like redesign work on the part was done after mine was replaced last year.
I know that the local shop ordered the part directly from the same dealer that gave me the higher quote, so I would assume that it was a regular GM part. However, I'm not sure that this is specified on my invoice. Of course, it should be pretty obvious when the second replacement is installed.

UPDATE:
took my wagon on upon request for the recall work, had it done in 45 minutes!
two new keys, and they both worked in the door lock.
turned in my info on the cylinder that i'd replaced last year or two years ago, and within TWO DAYS GM issued a full reimbursement check.
