DETROIT/NEW YORK (Reuters) - General Motors Corp has failed to persuade enough bondholders to accept a debt-for-equity swap, setting the stage for the largest-ever U.S. industrial bankruptcy by the end of this month.

General Motors is telling about 1,100 dealers on Friday that they will lose their franchises by late next year.
Unlike Chrysler, which on Thursday released a list of 789 dealers that it was cutting loose, G.M. does not plan to announce publicly the dealers that it no longer wants. Dealers whose franchises will not be renewed after October 2010 will receive a letter informing them of the decision.

According to New York Times
"G.M. also said that by 2010 it would phase out its Pontiac brand, eliminate 42 percent of its dealers, close 13 plants and cut 21,000 hourly jobs as part of its revised restructuring plan."

I just saw GM will shutter plants for 9 weeks due to large supplies of cars and very slow sales.
I did not hear a time line but I am sure it will be Sping/Summer.
This is not any shocker I saw this coming a few months back and just was wondering when they would make the call.
I expect many other MFG to do the same as they also have great supplies and nowhere to put the cars.

DETROIT (Reuters) – General Motors Corp has told U.S. dealers it is accelerating its timetable for closing about 1,700 dealerships as it rushes to meet a June 1 deadline to restructure under U.S. government oversight, people with knowledge of the discussions said.
